Burning smell when the dryer runs

What’s Happening

A burning smell from your dryer almost always means lint is accumulating somewhere it shouldn’t be – usually inside the dryer vent line, the lint trap housing, or pressed against a heating element. It is not a smell to ignore or run another cycle through. In most cases, it means your dryer is working harder than it should to exhaust hot air, and the built-up material is getting warm enough to give off that sharp, scorched odor.

Call (469) 972-3151

Dryers produce a significant amount of heat. When the exhaust path is clear, that heat moves lint and moisture out of the machine and out of your home. When something slows that airflow – a clogged vent line, a crushed transition hose, a corroded exterior cap – heat stays inside the system longer than it’s designed to. Lint doesn’t need an open flame to start burning. It needs heat and time. A clogged vent gives it both.

Why It Happens

Lint buildup in the dryer vent line

This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Lint passes through the trap and collects on the inner walls of the vent duct over time, narrowing the airflow path. You’ll notice your clothes are taking longer to dry, the exterior of the dryer feels unusually hot to the touch, or the laundry room itself seems warmer than normal after a cycle. The smell is usually faint at first and sharpens as the buildup gets thicker.

Lint caught near the heating element or blower

Fine lint particles that slip past the trap can settle inside the dryer cabinet, close to the heating element or around the blower wheel. When the machine heats up, those particles scorch. This type of burning tends to smell more acrid – almost plasticky – rather than the dry, papery smell of a venting problem. If the smell is strongest right at the start of the cycle and fades, this is a likely culprit.

A crushed or kinked transition hose

The short flexible hose connecting the back of your dryer to the wall fitting is called the transition duct. If the dryer was pushed too close to the wall during installation, that hose can kink or flatten, cutting off airflow almost entirely. Pull the dryer a few inches forward and look behind it. If the hose has a sharp bend or is compressed flat at any point, you’ve likely found the problem. Foil accordion-style hoses are particularly prone to this.

A blocked or damaged exterior vent cap

Your dryer vents to the outside through a small cap or louver on an exterior wall or through the roofline. Birds nest in them. Flaps corrode and stick shut. Lint mats up behind the cover until airflow drops to almost nothing. Walk outside during a cycle and hold your hand near the exterior cap. You should feel a consistent, strong push of warm air. If you feel little to nothing, the cap or the line behind it is obstructed.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop using the dryer until the cause is found. A burning smell is the system telling you something is wrong. Running another load hoping it clears on its own isn’t a strategy – it’s a risk. Dryer fires are among the more common appliance-related fires in residential homes, and lint is the fuel.
  • Clean the lint trap thoroughly. Pull the trap out, remove the lint by hand, and rinse the screen under water if it’s been a while. Some fabric softener residue builds up invisibly and restricts airflow through the screen even when it looks clean. Let it dry before reinserting it.
  • Check the transition hose behind the dryer. Gently pull the dryer forward and look at the flexible duct connecting it to the wall. If it’s kinked, crushed, or showing any visible damage, note that for the technician. Do not try to repair or replace a hose that connects to a gas dryer yourself – the gas connection at the back of the machine is under pressure and requires a qualified professional.
  • Check the exterior vent cap. Go outside and find where your dryer vents through the wall or roof. A wall cap is safe to inspect visually. A roof cap is not – do not climb up to check it. Note what you can see from the ground and let a technician handle anything at height.
  • Take a short video or a few photos. If you can see the transition hose, the lint trap housing, or the exterior cap from a safe position, photograph it. This helps the technician walk in with a clearer picture of what they’re dealing with before they pull out any equipment.

How We Fix It

When your local Kestrel Air Duct Cleaning team arrives, the first thing we do is assess the full vent path – from the lint trap housing at the dryer to the exterior termination point. Before any equipment comes off the truck, you’ll have a written price for the job. That’s the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work. No revisions at the door.

For most burning-smell calls, the core service is a professional dryer vent cleaning. We run a Rotobrush rotary brush system through the vent line to dislodge compacted lint from the duct walls, then draw everything out using Nikro negative-pressure equipment. Abatement Technologies HEPA filtration keeps loosened debris from recirculating into your laundry room during the process. If the exterior cap is blocked or damaged, we clear or address it as part of the same visit.

A standard dryer vent cleaning typically takes under an hour, though longer or more obstructed vent runs take more time. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it falls short within the guarantee period, we come back and make it right at no charge – in writing, not as a courtesy call we might or might not honor.
