Whole-system duct and dryer vent check with before-and-after photos - you see exactly what came out of your vents

Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Aprilaire-compatible vent sanitizing components across Los Angeles, with most replacement jobs running $220 to $410 including the part and labor. Same-day or next-day installation is typical once we confirm which Aprilaire system you have. The most common way owners discover a vent sanitizing problem is a faint mustiness that lingers after the HVAC kicks on, or a UV sanitizing lamp that stopped glowing through the viewport; either one means the sanitizing stage has stopped doing its job.

Aprilaire built its reputation on whole-house air treatment, and the vent sanitizing pieces they’ve shipped over the years have been solid, but nothing lasts forever in Southern California’s dust and heat. When the sanitizing component goes quiet, your air keeps moving, but it’s no longer being treated the way Aprilaire designed it to be. Dale Whitmore, our owner, grew up in the San Fernando Valley and has seen hundreds of these units; he’ll tell you the failure usually announces itself as a smell before it ever shows as a warning light.

Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To

Aprilaire vent sanitizing has appeared under a few different names depending on the era: the Aprilaire 5000 Electronic Air Cleaner handles particle filtration, while sanitizing duties typically fall to the Aprilaire UV germicidal lamp systems or the Aprilaire 1100 and 1200 series media-plus-sanitizer combinations. The key compatibility gotcha in Los Angeles is that units installed before roughly 2012 often used a two-pin UV lamp connector, while newer installs switched to a four-pin socket; we’ve had to make that correction on more than one visit where an online order had the wrong lamp entirely.

To identify what you have, start with the model plate on the door of the air handler or the duct-mounted housing. Aprilaire stamps the model number and usually a lamp wattage, like 14W or 18W. Measure the lamp length if it’s out of the housing; Aprilaire UV lamps run from 9 to 18 inches depending on the series. Honda and Toyota owners will get the analogy: you could buy an aftermarket lamp that fits the socket, but OEM Aprilaire lamps are calibrated for the ballast and housing, and our experience with aftermarket UV lamps in L.A. has been uneven at best. We stock OEM Aprilaire lamps on the truck, plus compatible replacement cells for the 5000 series when a sanitizer has been paired with it.

Signs Your Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

  • Faint musty or stale odor when the blower runs. UV sanitizing neutralizes organic growth on the coil and in the ductwork; once the lamp fades, that growth starts winning again. Most owners describe it as “old towel smell” that comes and goes with the fan.
  • No visible glow through the lamp viewport or a dark lamp. Aprilaire housings have a small inspection window; if the unit should be lit but the window is dark, the lamp or ballast has failed. The ballast in older units fails roughly as often as the lamp itself.
  • Increased dust or allergy symptoms during cooling season. When the sanitizing stage drops out, the air cleaner continues pulling particulates, but biological contaminants like mold spores and bacteria pass through untreated. If someone in the home notices a change, that’s a clue the sanitizer is no longer contributing.
  • Humming or buzzing from the sanitizer housing. A failing ballast often hums before it dies. If the sound changes pitch when you flip the fan on, the problem is almost certainly the electrical ballast feeding the UV lamp, not the lamp itself.
  • Lamp age beyond two years. Aprilaire UV lamps lose meaningful output after 12 to 24 months, even if they still glow. In Los Angeles, where the air handler may run hard for months of the cooling season, we see usable lamp life drift closer to the lower end of that range.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Aprilaire vent sanitizing replacement in Los Angeles runs $220 to $410 installed, depending on which component failed. A simple UV lamp swap is at the low end; a new ballast adds about $90 to $140 on top of the lamp. In the units where the sanitizer is married to an Aprilaire 5000 electronic cell, a full cell replacement pushes toward the top of that range.

Kestrel’s Kingswell Guarantee means you get a written price before we touch anything. That price covers the correct part, the labor to install and test it, and the old part hauled off. You’ll see the part pulled from OEM packaging in front of you, and we show you the lamp fired and glowing before we close the housing back up. If anything fails within 365 days, we come back and make it right at no charge; that’s the Done Right Promise, in writing on every job. We’re also the independent local choice for Aprilaire work in Los Angeles, not affiliated with Aprilaire itself.

DIY or Call Us?

A UV lamp is a plug-and-play component if you have the right lamp and a patient hand, but there are real mistakes waiting. The ballast holds a capacitor that can carry a charge even with the unit unplugged, which is reason enough not to start poking around the electrical end of the housing. The quartz glass lamp itself needs to be handled with clean hands or gloves; skin oil on the glass creates a hot spot that can shatter the lamp when it first fires. And the wiring in older Los Angeles homes sometimes doesn’t match the install manual, especially if the sanitizer was added to an existing system years after the house was built.

If you’re checking the viewport yourself, that’s easy and safe: just see if the lamp is lit when the system is running. Beyond that, the swap takes our technicians about 45 minutes, including verifying the ballast and testing the full cycle. Call (469) 972-3151 and we’ll ask the right questions and give you a firm number before we come out.
