Whole-system duct and dryer vent check with before-and-after photos - you see exactly what came out of your vents

Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

What’s Happening

A clogged dryer vent almost always means lint, debris, or a crushed section of duct has blocked enough airflow that your dryer can no longer push hot, moist air out of the house. Clothes take longer to dry, the cabinet runs hotter than usual, and in serious cases the blocked heat has nowhere to go – which is how dryer fires start.

Call (469) 972-3151

The dryer itself is fine in most of these situations. The vent line behind it is the problem. Lint is light when it’s floating, but it accumulates into a dense, flammable mat on the walls of the duct over months and years. Once that mat builds up enough to restrict airflow, your dryer works harder, runs longer, and gets hotter – none of which is good for the machine, your energy bill, or the house. The fix is almost always a professional cleaning, not a new appliance.

Why It Happens

Lint Buildup in the Duct

This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Every load sends a small amount of lint past the trap and into the vent line itself. Over time – usually faster in households that do more than one load a day – that lint packs against bends and rough seams inside the duct. You’ll notice it as clothes that used to dry in 40 minutes now taking an hour or more, or a laundry room that feels warmer and more humid than it should after a cycle.

A Crushed or Kinked Duct Section

Dryers get pushed back against walls, and the flexible duct section behind them gets kinked. A sharp bend in that foil or plastic flex duct does two things: it cuts airflow and it creates a ledge where lint piles up fast. If your dryer was recently moved – for a repair, a flooring install, anything – check whether the duct behind it was bent in the process. You may be able to see the kink without pulling the dryer out completely.

A Bird Nest or Debris at the Exterior Cap

The cap on the outside of your house where the vent exhausts is an attractive nesting spot. Starlings and sparrows in particular will build inside a vent cap in a matter of days in spring. If your dryer issues appeared suddenly rather than gradually, this is worth checking first. Walk outside and look at the vent cap – if it’s covered with nesting material or the flap won’t open when the dryer runs, that’s your answer.

A Closed or Stuck Damper Flap

Most exterior vent caps have a small damper flap that opens when air pushes through and closes when the dryer is off. Lint, rust, or cold weather can lock that flap shut or leave it only partially open. Have someone run the dryer while you stand outside – you should feel a clear puff of warm air from the cap. If you feel almost nothing, and you can rule out a blockage inside the duct, the cap itself may need to be replaced.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop using the dryer until the vent is cleared. A blocked vent combined with a running dryer is one of the leading causes of house fires. If the dryer is hot to the touch on the outside of the cabinet, or if the exhaust area smells like something is burning, don’t run another cycle.
  • Pull the dryer a few inches from the wall and look at the flex duct section connecting it to the wall. Note any obvious kinks or crushed sections. Photograph it – your technician will want to know the duct layout before they arrive.
  • Walk outside and check the vent cap. If it’s obstructed with nesting material or debris you can see clearly, you can note it, but don’t reach into the duct from the exterior – you can compact blockages further up the line by probing without the right equipment.
  • Clean the lint trap if you haven’t already and look at the slot it sits in. A lint trap that hasn’t been cleaned regularly can let debris fall into the housing and down into the duct. This tells you something about how the buildup started.
  • Do not attempt to snake or shop-vac the duct yourself. A standard shop vacuum doesn’t generate the sustained negative pressure needed to extract packed lint from a long duct run, and pushing a cable through can compact the blockage or damage the duct lining. Leave the actual clearing to a technician with the right tools.

How We Fix It

When your local Kestrel Air Duct Cleaning team arrives, the first thing we do is map the vent run – how long it is, how many bends, where the exterior cap sits. Then we give you a written price before anything is touched. That’s not a formality; it’s how every Kestrel job starts, every time, under the Kingswell Guarantee.

The cleaning itself uses Rotobrush rotary brush systems to dislodge packed lint from the duct walls, combined with Nikro negative-pressure units that pull the loosened debris out rather than pushing it back into the laundry room. Abatement Technologies HEPA filtration keeps particles out of the air in your home while we work. For most residential dryer vent jobs, the cleaning portion takes roughly an hour, depending on duct length and how severely it’s blocked.

If the exterior cap is damaged or the flex duct section behind the dryer is kinked, we’ll note it and talk through the options before anything changes. All work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it doesn’t hold up within the guarantee period, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing on the job, not a favor we extend at our discretion.
